The Bohlsen Family Emergency Department (ED) at South Shore University Hospital provides world class care to the local community. Our specialists treat adults and children for everything from serious medical conditions to minor emergencies. We are seamlessly connected to the full resources of Northwell Health, the largest health system in New York state. A newly constructed ED features 50,000 square feet of modern space.  The ED provides a simpler, more streamlined process accommodating more than 84,000 patients each year, including 13% pediatric patients.
 

ED features 


         94 treatment rooms including:

  • Four intake rooms for rapid assessment

  • Dedicated treatment areas for obstetrics/gynecology patients, bariatric patients and behavioral health patients (and a designated behavioral health ambulance exit)

  • Five isolation rooms including a decontamination suite with a separate entrance in a state-of-the-art containment unit

  • A critical care area with four medical resuscitation units and two trauma rooms, for a total of six beds

  • 16-bed clinical decision/observation unit, with portable/wireless telemetry

  • A new radiological testing area with X-ray and 64-slice, low dose CT (computed tomography) scanning capabilities

  • Separate ambulance and walk-in entrances

  • Helicopter landing pad (only Federal Aviation Administration designated helipad in Suffolk County)
